A little less heat. A little more headspace.
We're Tom and Marc, two mates in Cape Town with a love for the sauna and a familiar problem: our heads were ready to leave before we were. Smelt began with a hat. The reason behind it is a little bigger.
What does Smelt mean?
Two mates. One very hot room.
We loved the ritual of it: stepping out of the day, sitting down, and having nowhere else to be for a while. But the heat on our heads kept cutting that moment short. So we started looking into the wool felt hats worn in sauna culture, and looking for one we actually wanted to wear.
Finding a proper felt sauna hat locally proved harder than we expected. That became the starting point for Smelt: take something useful, give it some personality, and make it available here in South Africa.
We're still the two people behind the business. Smelt is based in Cape Town, our hats ship nationwide, and when you get in touch, you're talking to us.
smelt
Afrikaans · verb · to melt
Let the day melt away.
In Afrikaans, smelt means “melt”. Put it next to a very hot room and a wool hat, and there's a little humour in it. But there's also a feeling we come back to: the moment your shoulders drop, your thoughts settle, and the day starts to loosen its grip.
That's what Smelt means to us. Making room for a simple ritual. A bit of warmth, a bit of quiet, or a good conversation with the person on the bench beside you. Time you don't have to turn into anything productive.
The hat is our small contribution to that moment. Something practical, with a name that feels at home here.
One hat, considered properly.
Our focus is simple: a sauna hat in 100% wool felt, with embroidery on the front and “Warm regards” stitched on the back. Forest Green or Natural Cream. A useful piece of kit with a little character.
Wool felt provides an insulating layer between your head and the hot air. It's the practical reason for the hat, and the starting point for everything else. We care about the felt, the fit, and the details you notice when you pick it up.
We want Smelt to be the hat you reach for as part of your routine. Pack it, wear it, let it air out, and bring it along next time. Simple enough to become familiar.
How a sauna hat worksWarm regards, always.
It's stitched onto every hat, and it's how we want to run Smelt: with care for the thing we make and the people who wear it. Thanks for being here, for supporting a small Cape Town business, and for making us part of your ritual.
